Actually, both of the words carry the same meaning which is "late".

another meaning of lambat is slow eg. dia berjalan lambat seperti kura-kura (he walk slowly like a turtle)

both means late
example in malay 
1. saya lambat tiba kerana hujan (i was late due to rain)
3. dia didenda oleh cikgu kerana datang lewat ke sekolah (ali was fined by a teacher for coming late to school)
