Read the text and answer questions 1 to 10.
A hurricane is a large rotating storm with high speed winds that form over warm waters in tropical areas. Early inhabitants of the Caribbean named hurricanes after an evil god, Hurakan, who was believed to be the source of these destructive storms, Hurricanes are classified into five categories depending on their wind speed, which can range from 74 mph to over 155 mph.
When hurricanes strike land, they can cause huge amounts of damage. Most of the damage is caused by flooding and storm surge. A storm surge is when the ocean level rises at the coastline due to the power of the storm. Hurricanes often cause havoc within a short time, producing floods, uprooting trees and toppling houses and buildings. Fortunately, hurricanes are short-lived, usually lasting only about a week. Some, however, have lasted for more than 15 days
Hurricanes have different names in different places in the Caribbean and South Atlantic these storms are called hurricanes, in parts of Asia, typhoons; and in the South Pacific, cyclones. The United States began using women's names for hurricanes in 1953 and added men's names in 1979. Hurricanes in the Atlantic are based on a list of names maintained by the World Meteorological Organisation. The names go in alphabetical order and the storms are named as they appear. So the first storm of the year will always have a name that starts with the letter 'A'.
