The Rainforest World Music Festival
The Rainforest World Music Festival (often abbreviated as RWMF) is a unique three-day global music festival that brings together renowned world musicians from all continents and indigenous musicians from the interiors of the mythical island of Borneo. In March 1998, the Tourism Board approved the funding for the festival with the Sarawak Tourism Board as the organiser of the festival.
Every year, the Music Festival is set against the magnificent backdrop of the legendary Mount Santubong in Kuching, where the Sarawak Cultural Village lies. Established in 1998 with an audience of only 300 people it is now a major event held every year in the state's music calendar, eagerly anticipated by a crowd of over 20,000 people who include foreigners and local tourists. It is a family-friendly event with afternoon educational workshops and lectures, mini-concerts, cultural and craft displays, food stalls and main-stage evening concerts.
Besides music, this festival has a record of environmental awareness because of its many tree-planting campaigns, its attention to recycling and the use of shuttle buses to reduce carbon emission. The festival was awarded Best International Music Festival for six years consecutively, from 2010 to 2015.
