根据我（不靠谱）的直觉，also can比起can also会比较informal。

但查了资料后，其实两个写法都没有错，只是also can比较common。

举个例子：

1. Plasma may refer to one of the four fundamental states of matter, but it could also refer to a mineral aggregate. 

2. Plasma may refer to one of the four fundamental states of matter, but it also could refer to a mineral aggregate. 

两者都可以。（如果你怕错就写can also）
