根据Thought Co.: What is a Predicate Adjective?:
Predicative adjective (also called predicate adjective) is a traditional term for an adjective that usually comes after a linking verb rather than before a noun. (Contrast with an attributive adjective.)
我解释一下哈,简单来说一个adjective在句子中的位置会不同,所以我们会根据adjective在句子中的位置分成两种adjective, 也就是predicative adjective 和 attributive adjective。
我们用awesome来造句吧:
1. The movie we watched was awesome.
在这个句子中,was就是linking verb。因为awesome是在was (linking verb) 的后面,因此在这个句子中的awesome是predicative adjective。
2. We watched an awesome movie.
在这个句子中是没有linking verb的,所以awesome不是predicative adjective。在这个句子中,awesome是在movie (noun) 的前面,所以是attributive adjective。
你是五年级的吧?其实这个是不需要背的,考试不会特别问你这是attibutive or predicative adjective,知道就可以了。
* linking verb指的就是句子中在predicative adjective前面的verb,如is, are, was, were, seem, taste, feel等。用上面的句子解释,因为"we watched" 是对movie的补充/解释,所以可以简略成The movie was awesome;如果将was去掉的话,这个句子就有语病了,这就是linking verb的重要性。
